Wood-framed windows open and close nicely when they are new, and often for quite a while after that. But after years of aging, weathering and being subject to the house shifting around them, these windows can be quite difficult to open or close in one smooth motion. Basic maintenance every year or so can keep old windows gliding along almost as freely as if they were just installed.

Wax

Candle wax is a go-to solution for windows that skip along in the sash channel as you move them rather than smoothly opening and closing. With the window in open position, rub candle wax or a block of paraffin along the sash channels left and right of the window. The sash channel is that area along which the frame glides. Close the window and rub wax on the upper part of both channels. Repeat this process once a year or whenever the windows seem like they need it.

Stuck Window

If the reason your window won't slide is because it's stuck, you'll have to work it loose before you can help it glide. Windows become stuck due to coats of paint, debris in the sash channel, or swelling due to changes in weather conditions. Slide a sharp utility knife between the sash and stops on either side of the window. It may take several tries if multiple coats of paint have sealed them. If the outside of the window was painted as well, you may have to repeat the process on the outside. Wiggle the window loose. If that doesn't work, work a putty knife blade between the sash and stop by tapping it gently with a rubber mallet, working your way up and down the sash on both left and right sides of the window. Sand the edges of the stop once the window opens using a sanding block.
