• When there is no one present in the house, keep the doors closed. Usually, sliding doors are kept open in warm climatic conditions, though a screen may bypass quickly. The best way to secure the door is to lock it.

• If the sliding door has an old latch, replace it with a new one. Sliding doors usually operate with a typical hook latch that is pulled open with sufficient force. You can replace the latch with traditional lock, but do it with patience and diligence. It would require some work on the door as well as the frame. However, it will only be possible if the door is durable.

• Take a dowel stick and place it in between the inside door handle and frame. Make sure the dowel is long enough to hold the door handle to the doorframe when it is closed. In case if the door’s track is inside, the stick might just drop into that track, and if the track outside, the stick should be higher so that it prevents any movement of the handle.

• Take a few self-tapping screws and drill them into the upper track of the sliding door. That should allow the door to have a smooth slide, and move back and forth easily; yet hang quite low so that it prevents that door from being lifted out of the door’s frame.

• Make sure you put a sticker on the sliding door, which works like an alarm. Position it outward so that anyone outside could see it. You may not have an alarm literally, but it could be a saving grace, and intruders would not attempt to enter the door.
