• Measure the width of the door and mark its midpoint lightly in pencil. Determine how high up you want to hang the coat hook; 4 inches from the top of the door is standard, but if you have especially high ceilings, a window near the top of the door, decorative molding or other variables to consider, you might want to install yours lower.

• Extend your measuring tape upward from the midpoint mark and use it as a straightedge to find the spot where you want to install the hook. Mark the spot with the pencil.

• Hold the hook up to the door and center it over the mark. Insert the pencil through the screw hole or holes in the hook and make new marks on the door. Set the hook aside and erase the original mark, which you no longer need.
  

• Rap sharply on the door with your knuckles. Listen to the sound it makes to determine whether it is solid or hollow. If it is solid, you will use the mounting hardware that came with the hook; if it is hollow, you will use hollow-core door anchors instead.

• Drill pilot holes through each of the marks for the screws. Use a drill bit one size smaller than the diameter of the screws or hollow-core door anchors you plan to install.

• Hold the hook in place on the door. If you have a solid door, use a screwdriver to screw the mounting screws in through the holes in the hook. If you have a hollow door, thread the hollow-core door anchors into the holes.

• Tap the hollow-core door anchors with a hammer until the metal flange is flat against the hook. Use a screwdriver to turn the anchors, which opens the anchor mechanism inside the door and distributes the weight of the hook across a larger surface area, protecting the plaster.
