Hinges are small components hidden between the door frame and the door leaf or window frame and the window leaf during the installation of doors and windows. Although they are small, they are the most important connecting parts for the opening and closing of doors and windows. The quality of the hinge itself and the quality of its installation are the key factors determining whether the door or window leaf can open and close smoothly. Hinges can be classified into ordinary hinges, spring hinges and large door hinges, mainly used for the installation and connection of different components. Next, I will share with you the correct installation method of door hinges.

 door hinges

Methods and steps:

  1. Determine whether the height, width and thickness of the hinge match the door. Hinges that do not match in height, width and thickness may not be able to bear the required weight, affecting the use of the door.

  2. Hinge installation requires matching screws and other fastening accessories. Check whether the accessories are matched and whether the quantity is complete.

  3. Determine the number and height of hinge installation.

    1. The number of hinges is determined by the base material of the door. Usually, two hinges are enough for unpainted doors or PVC doors that are relatively light; for solid wood composite doors, solid wood doors, metal doors and other relatively heavy doors, three hinges are more appropriate and can bear the weight of the door, avoiding deformation and damage over time. (The third hinge is installed 30 cm below the position of the upper hinge.)

    2. Spring hinges (made of zinc alloy or galvanized iron) have a spring device and are mainly used for connecting furniture door panels. The thickness requirement is between 16-20mm, and usually two hinges are installed, with the upper and lower hinges respectively at 1/3 of the distance from the upper and lower corners.

    3.  The installation position of ordinary hinges is at 1/4 of the distance from the upper and lower corners of the door to ensure uniform force distribution.

  4. Select the corresponding hinge connection method according to the material, such as using screws to fix the connection of wooden doors/iron doors/stainless steel doors and frames.

  5. Cut the groove. Cut a groove on the side where the hinge is to be installed. The depth of the groove should be consistent with the thickness of a single leaf plate. After cutting the groove, place the single leaf plate flat in the groove and check whether the surface of the leaf plate is flush with the surface of the door edge (door frame).

  6. Secure the hinge. Use the matching screws to fix the hinge. The screws should be perpendicular to the surface of the door frame and door edge. If the screws are slanted, there may be squeezing between the hinges when the door is closed, affecting the service life of the door.

Notes:

  1. Unlike ordinary door hinges, the mother-and-child hinge is not two leaf plates of the same size, but looks like a mother and child, consisting of a smaller child leaf plate and a larger mother leaf plate. The child leaf plate is like a part cut out of the mother leaf plate. Compared with ordinary hinges, the mother-and-child hinge is thinner and not suitable for heavier doors.

  2. The core of the hinges is the bearing, and the flexibility and durability of the door opening and closing are determined by the bearing. The load-bearing capacity of the mother-and-child hinge is lighter than that of the ordinary hinge. It is best to install three hinges to better bear the weight.

  3. If installing mother-and-child hinges on a wooden door, it is best to choose 304 stainless steel material. This hinge is 3mm thick and feels thick and flexible when held in the hand.
