Even high-quality hydraulic door closers require regular maintenance to preserve their performance and reach their rated service life cycles, especially in varying temperature environments and high-traffic areas. Simple upkeep tasks can prevent hydraulic leaks, stiff operation, and speed inconsistencies, all while protecting the surface treatment and internal components. Understanding the maintenance needs corresponding to the product’s parameters will keep your door closer working like new for years.

1. Why is the door closer leaking oil? Can it be repaired?

This is the most fatal and common problem.

Reason: Usually, it is due to long-term high-frequency usage causing the oil seal to wear out, or because of the forceful push of the door during closing, which results in an instantaneous excessive pressure inside breaking the sealing ring.

Solution: It is basically impossible to repair. The internal pressure of the door closer is in a high-pressure sealed state. Once the oil leaks, the hydraulic buffering function will disappear, and the door closing will make a "ping-pong" sound. Since the repair cost is higher than replacement, it is usually recommended to replace it directly.

2. How should I screw the two adjustment screws (1 and 2)?

Many people cannot adjust the closing speed properly and even remove the screws.

Screw No. 1 (Speed/Closing): Controls the travel speed of the door from the maximum opening to around 15°.

Screw No. 2 (Latch/Locking): Controls the locking speed from 15° to 0°.

Principle: Tighten clockwise (slower), loosen counterclockwise (faster).

Warning: Do not unscrew the screws completely! Otherwise, the hydraulic oil will gush out, and the door closer will be completely ruined.

3. Why does the door closer become particularly heavy in winter and close particularly fast in summer?

This is the same as the principle of the spring-loaded mechanism. It is caused by the physical properties of the hydraulic oil.

Solution: Most door closers use ordinary hydraulic oil. In winter, the oil becomes thicker and the resistance increases, making the door close very slowly or not at all; in summer, the oil becomes thinner, reducing the resistance, and the closing will produce a violent impact sound.

Countermeasure: High-end door closers use "constant temperature hydraulic oil", which is less affected by temperature differences. Ordinary users only need to slightly adjust 1/4 turn with a screwdriver during the change of seasons.

4. What is the "stop point" function? Can my door closer hold the door in place?

Many users find that the door cannot be opened after purchase, or they want the door to remain open for ventilation but close it.

Non-Hold Open: As long as the door is open, it will automatically pull it back.

Hold Open: The door will stop at 90° or a specific angle.

Question: Can it be added later?

Solution: No. This depends on the internal structure. You must confirm whether it is "positioning type" or "non-positioning type" when purchasing.

5. Where should the door closer be installed, on the "pull side" or the "push side" of the door?

This is the most confusing point for beginners.

Standard installation: The main body of the door closer is on the door, and the bracket arm is on the door frame (seen by the person pulling the door from that side).

Parallel arm installation: The main body of the door closer is on the door, but it is installed through parallel supports (seen by the person pushing the door from that side).

Solution: This depends on your opening direction and space limitations. If there is a wall behind the door, it may be necessary to choose parallel arm installation to prevent collision.

Regular, gentle maintenance—such as cleaning debris, checking adjustment valves, and protecting against extreme temperatures—goes a long way in extending the life of your hydraulic door closer. By caring for the material and functional features outlined in the parameter list, you can maintain consistent closing speed, hydraulic buffering, and anti-slam performance. With minimal effort, you’ll maximize the durability and reliability of your hydraulic door closer, ensuring safe and quiet operation for all types of doors.
